1. Do I need to apply stone sealing to my natural stone (granite, marble, slate, limestone)?
Most granite applications do not require stone sealing. Their surface is too dense for liquids to seep in, not even sealer would penetrate. The liquid would only just sit on it.
Some granite colors, however, need regular application of sealer. As it is a natural material, each granite type will vary in porosity. Some require resealing more often than others.
If you are not sure whether you need to apply a sealer or not, drop a small amount of water onto the stone’s surface. If the water beads up, you don’t have to worry about anything. But if the water soaks into the surface, you will have to seal it.
The case, however, is not the same for marble, onyx, sandstone, and travertine. For these stones, sealing is a must as they are more susceptible to staining and etching compared to granite. Application of sealer should help you keep your stones looking new for the years to come.
Moreover, applying a sealer to protect your stone is much more practical than getting professional help in repairing or replacing your countertop or floor.
2. Can I seal the stone myself?
Yes, most sealers are easy to use. Reading the product instruction should make it a piece of cake.
Before applying the sealer, clean the stone with water and mild soap. Let it dry. Ensure that there are no more liquid that has seeped into it.
Clear the area. Wrap the fixtures with a plastic cover. And seal the stone as instructed.
3. What is the recommended type of sealer for my natural stone?
Natural stones require a high-quality stone impregnator during installation.
Designed to be absorbed into the stone, it protects the material from within the surface. Compared to a topical sealer, which creates a thin-film coating on the surface, a stone impregnator will neither turn yellow nor be peeled-off since it is on the surface. It does not affect the appearance of the stone.
Sealing, however, does not offer an absolute impenetrable shield against staining. It only increases the window period of blotting time, allowing easy removal of liquid should any spill or drip occur.
4. How often do I need to reapply a stone sealing?
Darker granite will only need sealing a little often. Every year or two should suffice. They are denser than light ones. Besides, any stain is usually nearly invisible because of the stone’s darkness.
Light-colored granite, on the other hand, must be sealed yearly.
For marble, onyx, sandstone, and travertine, once or twice a year are advisable.
As a general rule, if you notice that the stone darkens when it comes in contact with water, that’s the time you should reseal.
